This is another one of the great science kits from Scientific Explorer. It’s pretty basic and geared for kids ages 4 and up, and I would say it’s more specifically for ages 4-6. For kids any older than that it might be too basic. But for what it claims to do, it does a pretty good job. The packaging is great, so it would make a great present for any kid. What’s inside is a bit more no-frills, but it does teach some valuable scientific concepts.

It’s basically a color mixing laboratory with test tubes, mixing trays, pipettes and mixing cups. It also comes with a bag of polyacrylamide for turning some of your colorful creations into gel crystals. This was one of the most fun aspects of this toy and this in itself makes it worth the cost (approximately $20 in 2008).

If you’re looking for a kit that teaches several aspects of the scientific method this may not be the one for you. You could check out some of the other science kits at Atomic Elephant Toy for a larger selection. But if you’re looking for something fairly elementary, this kit gives a good introduction on teaching kids how to think like a scientist. With that in mind, I can recommend this for the younger kids who may not have been exposed to any science yet.
