This was a pretty basic solar system model put out by Slinky Science for around $20. I put this one together with my soon-to-be six year old and while he was able to help with most of it, some of the assembly took a little more dexterity than he has. In particular, putting the string through the eye holes on some of the smaller planets like Mercury, Mars and Pluto was a little difficult. When completed, it’s a pretty neat looking planet mobile and as the assembly wasn’t too difficult, this toy might be worth a try if you have children interested in astronomy and the planets.
Another point worth mentioning… the glow-in-the-dark paint in my kit had dried up a bit. I had to add a little water and stir it pretty good but after doing that it worked okay. If you’re thinking that it might be easier to make a mobile out of paper mache and wire coat hangers, well, we thought that too. That’s what we tried first and as our results there were pretty lacking, we ended up buying this kit. As far as science kits go, I can recommend this one with the above caveats. It’s not too expensive to make your own mobile from scratch, but if after giving that a try and you want something more, this is a good option.
