Manufacturer: Uncle Milton

This has got to be one of the most original science kits and educational toys ever made. Whoever came up with the concept of the original Uncle Milton Ant Farm was a genius. I bought three of the original ant farms (about $12 each) last fall and connected them together. I got all three tubes of ants (in the mail) at the same time and put each in a different farm.

Note, the farms were connected but I wasn’t sure if the ants I received were from the same colony so I wasn’t sure if they were going to get along very well after mingling with one another. For the most part they got along very well together. It only took about a day for them to be completely mixed. What was really interesting about my ant experiment was how they created different areas for their ant activities such as sleeping and even burying their dead. Yes, some of the ants will inevitably die. But if you’re considering buying an ant farm for a child, it’s a great way for them to learn about the cycle of life. In fact, whether intended or not, they’re going to learn about it in just a few months as the life span of these farm ants is only 3-6 months. But don’t let this discourage you. This is a great educational toy and it’s certainly lots of fun.

Overall: highly recommended.
